Grand opportunities for Australia’s hydrogen industry – and for a strategic regional rebalancing

Professor Emeritus John A. Mathews and his collaborators have just published an article on Australia’s hydrogen industry in East Asia Forum. The article argues that Japan and South Korea’s decision to transform themselves into ‘hydrogen societies’ opens new opportunities for Australia to revive and decarbonize its economy; to become a major green hydrogen supplier for Asia Pacific region; and to rebalance its regional economic relationships. The article also pinpoints the crucial challenge facing Australia’s policymakers: how to resolve the fossil-fuel versus renewable debate in Australia once and for all.
The authors are chief investigators on a three-year ARC-funded Discovery Project examining East Asia’s clean energy shift and the implications for Australia.
