The Greening of China’s Energy System Outpaces its Further Blackening: A 2017 update

Professor John Mathews and Xin Huang have just had an article on the greening of China’s energy system published in The Asia-Pacific Journal, together with an editor’s comment by Mark Selden. This article offers definitive demonstration and fresh evidence that China is indeed greening its total energy system. By enabling a direct comparison between burning of fossil fuels in aggregate and generation of electric power from renewable sources, the authors show that in each of the past six years China’s increase in fossil fuel burning in aggregate has been exceeded by the generation of green electric power.
