Japan’s Smart Cities

Andrew DeWit is Professor in the School of Policy Studies at Rikkyo University in Japan. He is a close observer of Japan’s energy transition, particularly the green shift evident in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster. This Working Paper is focused on Japan’s multiple policies to promote smart cities anchored by microgrids, where the cases of Toyama and Hirosaki are presented as exemplary. These Japanese cases complement the Sino-Chinese cases of Tianjin and Guangzhou eco-cities that I discussed in Chapter 17 of Global Green Shift. Professor DeWit can be contacted at: dewit@rikkyo.ne.jp
